The Sultana was a severely overloaded Mississippi River steamboat seven miles north of Memphis in 1865 when its boilers exploded killing 1,700 of 2,100 recently released Union prisoners of war. Only rated to carry 376 passengers, this was the worst marine disaster in United States history. Contains an index, source notes, and a bibliography in the rear. Original black publisher's covers with gilt spine lettering. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates. The dust jacket has a crease to the top edge of the rear panel, else it is in similarly nice condition with no chips, tears, or markings.; B&W Photographs & drawings; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 346 pages .
