Author John Sergeant Wise, son of Virginia Governor Henry Wise, served with the VMI Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market during the Civil War.

As noted in the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Diomed "was a pioneering effort in what soon became a popular literary genre. Written as if in the voice of Wise's favorite hunting dog, it was extremely popular and featured many anecdotes of Wise's life, particularly his love of hunting birds and small game."
