William Matthew Hart (1830-1908) was a bird illustrator and lithographer who worked for John Gould from 1851. He began by making the patterns for the lithographic plates for Gould's monograph on Hummingbirds, as well as working on The Birds of Great Britain with Henry Constantine Richter. By 1870 Hart had become Gould's chief artist and lithographer. The edition is limited to 975 numbered copies and 25 lettered review copies, all signed by Mr. Frasconi, Mr. Wescott, and Mr. Blumenthal. This copy is one of the 25 lettered copies (copy number "F"). In addition to the other three signatures, it is signed by Monroe Wheeler. In 1935 Wheeler was employed by New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
