LOEBER Irish Fiction, 125 BROWN Ireland in Fiction, 444
Four stories, primarily concerned with the agrarian unrest in rural Ireland, written from a viewpoint sympathetic to the catholic peasantry. Set variously near Athlone, in Connemara, and in Co. Louth. One story, a satirical account of evangelical Protestant political and social attitudes, was apparently modelled on and directed against Sir Harcourt Lees, a prominent contemporary leader of rabidly anti-Romanist opinion.Crowe (1798-1868), novelist, journalist and historian, was reared by two aunts in Dublin after the early death of his apparently 'Irish parents'. He was educated in Ireland and married a woman from Co. Wicklow in Dublin in 1823, so he had a first-hand knowledge of Irish social conditions in the 1820s. Although he lived in Ireland intermittently he lived for much of his life in France and in London working as a journalist.
