London: Vizetelly & Co, 1890. First Thus. . Hardcover. Good. Undated, c1890. First thus. Hardback, quarter cloth with paper covered boards. Gilt titling to spine. 22 × 14.5cm. xiii, 155pp + ads. Daphnis and Chloe was written in the 2nd or 3rd century CE and considered the first pastoral prose romance. It tells the story of two foundlings who are brought up by shepherds and who fall in love at an early age. The translation for this edition follows that of C V Le Grice, the illustrations from the 1800 Amyot Edition, and the head and tailpieces fromt he 1718 edition (see the introduction for more details). The book has nine full page plates. Condition: A good copy. There is rubbing to the corners, edges and spine ends, and a little tanning to the pages but this copy remains in strong readable condition.
