[Originally first published,1975 (CAPE,London,UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,Jill Bennett illustrated,1st edn),this BLAKE illustrated French flap format in 2002,and this particular issue/edn published exclusively for Marks & Spencer p.lc., 2007.] FINE. No owner inscrptn and absence of a published price.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,matt paper-covered card covers with French flaps with black-lettered text - synopsis and potted biographies of author+illustrator - each flap with a Blake's small colour illustration,a glossy, colour pictorial illustration by Quentin Blake,to front cover with author's capitalised, glossy, embossed white-lettered name and a matt yellow-lettered title and illustrator's name in black-lettering to lower edge of his illustration.Spine/backstrip with a glossy yellow panel at head of same with black-outlined,capitalised, white-lettered author name within; a glossy thumbnail colour detail from front's illustration,a yellow-lettered title and publisher's capitalised,white-lettered initials and white illustrated colophon to foot of same, rear cover with a pale blue background with a series of 3 thumbnail blue outline illustrations of falling pheasants and a b/w barcode thus - M 8477 804 S. Negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present and immaculate plain pale yellow endpapers.Top edges with sporadic but miniscule spotting,fore-edges brighter and cleaner without spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK,12mo French flaps, illustrated, 1st edn thus,9-270pp [paginated] includes 22 partitions with full+part-page b/w illustrations by Quentin Blake throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] half-title,b/w illustrated title page,a dedication,a Contents list/table,and as the last page - a message to the children who have read the book. Seems to be an uncommon,if not scarce, format issue/edn. Visually, the external appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's 15+ year-old age and nature, i.e. a children's ephemeral softback. It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for it's brightnesss, cleanliness and lack of age-acquired detracting faults commonly encountered in a softback. See also my book IDs' rja1159924 and rjaa1160024 for similar M&S Exclusive format isuues of 'The Twits' and 'THE BFG' resspectively. Danny lives with his Dad in an old gypsy caravan behind a filling-station.Danny's dad is the best - a wonderful mechanic,a brilliant storyteller and a genius at kites. But,as we all learn as we get older,grown-ups can be complicated creatures, and so it is that one day, when he is nine years old,Danny discovers that his dad has a deep, dark secret. It is a secret that is just about to lead them on a dangerous and thrilling adventure. . .
