Contemporary full purple morocco, sides ruled with elaborate gilt border, front cover lettered in gilt with title and the name of "Mrs. J.D. MacDonald", spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 40 full-page tinted lithographic plates including frontispiece, all with tissue guards, by Thomas Picken, George McCulloch, Robert M. Bryson, Alexander Laby, Edmund Walker, and Frederick Jones; after George Francklin Atkinson. Two presentation inscriptions to flyleaf dated 1865 and 1907; additional blue ink ownership inscription to flyleaf. Minimal shelfwear, light fading to spine, some plates very fractionally shaved, occasional light spotting and smudging, withal an excellent copy in a striking binding, presumably commissioned by Mrs. J.D. MacDonald. An amusing satire of British life in mid-19th century India. Abbey, Travel, 487.

Robert Frew has been trading in antiquarian books since 1975, starting out from an open market in Camden Lock, followed by shops in Primrose Hill, in Great Russell Street by the British Museum, Maddox Street Mayfair and now on the borders of South Kensington and Knightsbridge. Not to mention stints in Portobello Road and Safe Store Battersea.We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, of which Robert Frew is a past president.We Exhibit at most of the major international ILAB fairs in America, often in Europe and sometimes in the Middle and Far East. We are also members of the PBFA, exhibiting in London and occasionally in the provinces.
