Original green cloth, gilt sailing ship on front board, spine gilt. Dark stain on upper portion of front board, cloth worn at extremities. Gift inscription on front fly leaf, previous owner's name stamped on titlepage and front pastedown. Light tideline in fore-edge of final fifty pages of text. Withal, still a very good copy. First American edition, after the London edition of the previous year. The Challenger and her crew undertook a long voyage in order to collect scientific information regarding the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, in the hope that a telegraphic line of communication could be established between the old and new worlds. Spry describes the voyage from England to Lisbon, Gibraltar, the West Indies, Bermuda, the Cape of Good Hope, the Straits of Magellan, and finally to Spithead
