The first edition in book form, 1876, was greatly revised from the original version which had appeared the previous year in the Revista occidental. (O Mistério da estrada de Sintra, written in collaboration with Ramalho Ortigão, had appeared in 1870.) The second edition in book form, 1880, was again greatly revised, achieving almost double the length of the previous edition. The present edition, though not revised by Eça, does contain a few minor variations.The bindery "A Carmelita" was founded in 1926 by Frederico d'Almeida, probably the best Portuguese bookbinder of the twentieth century. He worked there until 1940 before moving to Rua António Maria Cardoso, 31, ao Chiado, where he continued to work under his own name until the 1970s.
