Without a linear plot, the work follows a series of sketches delineating people and customs contemporary to its time, painting a picture of Cranford, a market town governed by etiquette, custom and an intricate network of ladies.Adorned with the popular illustrations by Hugh Thomson in colour, renowned for decorating many works by important authors, including Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. A new edition with a preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with decorative gilt to the front board, characteristic of Thomson's works. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with decorative gilt tooling to front board and spine. Externally smart with shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities. Front hinge only lightly strained, holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. With illustrations in colour by Hugh Thomson. Very Good

Sinopse

A gently comic picture of life in an English country town in the mid-nineteenth century, Cranford describes the small adventures of Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two middle-aged spinster sisters striving to live with dignity in reduced circumstances. Rich with humor and filled with vividly memorable characters—including the dignified Lady Glenmire and the duplicitous showman Signor Brunoni—Cranford is a portrait of kindness, compassion, and hope.
