Sobre este item
Hartford: Elisha Babcock, 1785. First edition. Leather_bound. good. First edition. Small 8vo. in full contemporary calf, spine label in red leather lettered and lined in gilt. (1) 304 (1) pp. A good example, wear about the edges and tips, front hinge crudely repaired and with chipping at the head and foot of the spine strip. Offsetting about the edges of the first and last leaves from the binding overlaps. The final blank is largely torn away. Internally clean with only occasional foxing. No front endpaper. Completed in 1774 (though not published until this book appeared in 1785), this was the first American-written epic poem, an allegorical work in which "Canaan" is actually America and that foreshadowed and depicted the struggles of the American Revolution. The book is dedicated to George Washington. Timothy Dwight (IV) taught at Yale from 1771-1777 and later became the school's sixth president. During the Revolution, he served as chaplain to the Connecticut Continental Brigade until the death of his father in 1778.
