Paris: Béchet jeune, 1832. Half leather with marbled boards. Gilt titles to the spine. The hinges of the spine have a little cracking, but are still holding well. Marbled end papers. This is a "First Thus" and seems to be an expanded edition. Originally published by Bechet Jeune between 1823-26, this edition was published in 1832. In addition to the 21 numbered plates, there are 5 marked biz, plus engraved title, so a total of 27 plates. 7 of the plates are hand coloured. Curiously, every copy I have seen online has 7 hand coloured plates, presumably the same ones. The plates depict poisonous snakes, plants, fungi etc. Most of the pages are in very good condition. The title has a touch of darkening and staining to the corners. The first 12 plates have light staining (water?) to the spine edge, not affecting engraving. Tab 2 has loss to the edge (not affecting plate). 3 of the coloured engravings of mushrooms have had closed tears repaired to the rear with archival tape. Not particularly…

Only one slightly creeps on to actual image. Otherwise in a very good, clean condition. Blank to verso. Image size: 290 x 235 mm. Total sheet size: 560 x 370 mm (22 x 14½ inches). Elisabeth Ivanovsky, was a Moldova born Belgian painter and illustrator. Best known for her children's book illustrations, her work drew inspiration from Russian traditions, and avant-garde art.

The preface is dated March 1796, and the pagination conforms to the first edition, but the date to the title page has been very neatly cut out. We are a little confused by this copy. The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge of the spine a little chipped, exposing the paper beneath. Still attractive though. A few light foxing spots, but the engravings are good clean impressions. The first section is of 'Elfin Eclogues', featuring characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing odes on various subjects, including: 'Music', 'Morning', 'Evening',…
