Rebound in dark red buckram with original decorated covers mounted on front covers (both faded at the outside edge), black leather title patches with gilt lettering on spines. Complete with all plates and maps. No previous owner marks or writing on any pages. Original errata slips present in both volumes. Original tissue sheets present opposite color plates. Minor foxing on a few pages but nearly all pages free of foxing. Shallow bump to fore-edge of text block of volume II. Two of the color plates, plate 3 and plate 9, have brown stain in lower outside margin corner (not into the plate image). PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Original pink coated free endpages that advertise books are bound in at the front and end of each volume. Very solid bindings. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL SET BEING OFFERED.

An incredibly rare and impressive Elzevier printing of Joannes de Laet's "Persia", written to aid in his direction of the Dutch West Indian Company. This work was one of the best books describing Middle Eastern, and Arab, and Islamic history. Laet covers all expected topics of Persian history – topography, geography, religious customs, government and politics, etc. It also includes 17th-century descriptions of Middle Eastern cities such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Mecca. This 1633 first edition includes eight full-page engravings of Persian dress.

Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history 'Spectacle of Nature'. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit.
Pluche, however, was not known for just 'Spectacle'. He wrote several other works including a large geographical concordance. This book, published in 1764, is an alphabetical concordance supplemented with 14 folding plates and maps.

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Batty (1789-1848) army officer and artist Batty compiled books illustrated with plates etched by himself. He served in the Peninsular War, in the Duke of Wellington's 1815 Campaign, at Waterloo, where he was injured in the thigh. "Following Wellington's victory, Batty entered Paris with the 3rd battalion on 7 July, having en route been at the storming of the fortress of Péronne on 26 June.
