'Christianity and Democracy is a brief but important study of the democratic philosophy of society and its indebtedness to Christian inspiration. This book marks a development in the political thought of Maritain, due no doubt in some measure to his experiences in the United States. It is his belief that the democratic impulse has arisen in human history as a temporal manifestation of the inspiration of the Gospel, and that a great renewal of the spirit is taking place which will tend to restore democracy to its true nature. The essential characteristics of a democratic and humanist political philosophy are, he says, the inalienable rights of the individual, the political rights of the people whose consent is implied in their government, human equality, the primacy of justice and law at the root of society, and the amelioration and emancipation of human life-the ideal of brotherhood' - Donald and Idella Gallagher, The Achievement of Jacques and Raissa Maritain, 22. [Gallagher 1048.2].
