Sobre este item

Boulder, CO.: Westview Press, 1990. Scholarly text presents the first study of freed and fugitive slaves in East Africa and the first full account of the struggles of slaves and ex-slaves for freedom during the colonial conquest, the process of the conquest began with the abolition of the East Africa sea-borne slave trade in 1873 and ended with the abolition of slavery in 1907. The author challenges the standard interpretation of East African slavery as a benign, paternal, and stable (though dynamic) system. This text is the most complete survey to date of written records of missionaries, British officials, and Christian freed slaves from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author has also drawn from oral traditions and published accounts. 241 pp. Illustrated with archival photographs. Publisher's stamp on the half-title page. Tiny slight crease to upper corners.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
