Nicolas de Fer was a 17th-century French cartographer known for his abundance of artistic illustrations. One of his most popular atlases was his 'Introduction to Fortification'. This work is an illustrated treatise on military forts and weapons and the varieties used by the French military and royalty. Printed in 1690, this edition includes views of star forts, hexagonal forts, and various designs of fortification architecture.
