Mr. Hough's research took him on prolongued journeys from Christian's birthplace to the other side of the world where Christian's death and Bligh's miraculous open-boat escape occurred. For the first time Christian is seen as a troubled and guilty man, proud but soft beneath the skin. Bligh, who had been Captain Cook's brilliant navigator and inadvertent assassin, emerges as a courageous but uncertain leader out of touch with the needs of his men.
