Sobre este item

London: The Bodley Head 1968. 8vo. First edition. [8], 338 pp ; 279 pp. Blue hardbacks. Dust jackets (not price clipped). Clean boards and internal condition. Minor rubbing to extremities of jacket, a few marks but mostly clean. Solzhenitsyn, made internationally famous in 1962 by the publication of his novel, 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' considers 'Cancer Ward' his most important. It portrays the relationships of a group of people in a cancer ward of a provincial Soviet hospital, from under normal conditions to their eleventh hour of illness. The experiences of the central character, Oleg Kostoglotov, closely echo Solzhenitsyn's own, himself becoming a cancer ward patient in the mid 1950s, after being release from a concentration camp. Part II is a continuation of 'Cancer Ward' five weeks after the end of Part I, introducing several new characters which lend a lens to the various benefits and disadvantages of Soviet socialism, and lending insight to the conflict between liberals and conservatives in Russia today. . Near Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 1968.
