London : Orr and Smith , 1835 A nice copy of this rare work. It originated as an article for the British Cyclopaedia of Natural History, and was enlarged for separate publication to give readers a systematic introduction to the science of Botany. In original pebbled brown cloth with gilt title on spine, and gilt edges to pages. Profusely illustrated with line drawings and with hand coloured plates. The binding is in good condition - the spine has been relaid at some point and corners and spine edges have been repaired so the book is tight and firm. With marbled endpapers and signature of Miss Wilson and the number 14 to one of the preliminaries. Internally the book is very clean and bright. The index of illustrations is difficult to interpret as it does not distinguish between text illustrations and plates and appears to randomly list some text illustrations and not others - however, I think the book is lacking a colour plate frontispiece and 2 other plates giving 24 plates present of a possible 27.… Ler mais

Manila: Commonwealth of the Philippines Department of Agriculture and Commerce, 1950. Soft cover. Good/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" x 9. A set of three paperback books published in 1950 as part of a United Nations educational programme with descriptions of plants of the Philippine Islands and their uses. All three volumes show some wear and the covers are discoloured through sunning. Volume 3 has some staining externally to the spine but this has not spread through to the pages. A previous owner has put his name stamp on all three volumes. Minor chipping / loss to the cover edges. Internally clean and sound. Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) was an English botanist who trained as a printer, but was encouraged to follow his interest in botany after coming to Philadelphia in the early 19th century. He spent much of the rest of his life studying the flora and fauna of the United States, publishing Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada, heading the botanical gardens at Harvard University, and working at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This is one of several important papers of that were published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. Scarce. In Very Good+ Condition: disbound from a larger volume; final leaf largely detached from text block; minimal foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.
