Sobre este item
London: J.M Dent & Co.; Dodd, Mead, & Co., New York:, 1896. First edition, beautifully illustrated by Herbert Granville Fell (1872-1951), whose work was influenced by the pre-Raphaelite, symbolic, and art nouveau movements. A contemporary review described the volume as"perfection" (The Sketch, p. 3). Joseph Jacobs (18541916) was an historian of Jewish culture, a literary scholar, and one of the most popular 19th-century adapters of children's fairy tales. His introduction emphasises the literary and artistic (rather than the theological) importance of the Book of Job. Quarto. Original cream cloth over bevelled boards, spine and front cover lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt. Woodcut frontispiece and numerous illustrations to text, title page printed in black and red, all by Herbert Granville Fell. Decorative printer's device of Turnbull and Spears, Edinburgh, on last page. Gift inscription dated December 1896 on front free endpaper. Spine toned and gilt dulled in places, scattered marks to cloth, offsetting to endpapers, occasional light foxing to leaves: a very good copy. The Sketch, vol. 16, no. 199, Nov. 1886.
