James Street (1903-1954) worked as a journalist before deciding to become a Baptist minister. Unhappy with the job he quit and went back to journalism. He wrote a short story that was published by Cosmopolitan magazine that was later turned into a hit movie (Nothing Sacred) by David Selznick. A Broadway musical (Hazel Flagg) followed, then another short story was turned into a movie (Living It Up) starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. He later went on to write books about boys and dogs.
The Biscuit Eater was made into a movie in 1940 and again in 1972. Another book (Good-bye, My Lady) was made into a movie in 1956. Young Lonnie wants a dog of his own and so has to raise the runt of the litter. Any dog that eats chicken eggs is called a biscuit eater and will become a poor bird dog. The runt, named Promise, is of course a biscuit eater and so the story begins.....
