N. Okaes, 1633. First Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good. Beautifully bound in full brown 19th-century polished calf, spine with raised bands , contrasting red and black morocco labels (two red, one black), and elaborate gilt floral and geometric tooling, covers bordered with three gilt rules, with rosettes at corners, surrounding center panels in bluind composed of rules and repeating floral motifs with floral devices at corners, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers (minor wear; very slight dampstaining to small areas of cover; upper corner of page 125/5 restored with a single character in the page number supplied; some marginal evidence of dampstaining and smudges). Withal, an exceptionally attractive copy. In this state of the title page, line 9 ends 'unto E-'. Attribution of this work has been disputed for centuries. The later 2nd edition expressly attributes it to John Donne, Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral (1572-1631), while later authorities agree, assign it to his son John Donne the younger (asserting he worked from his father's notes), or assign credit elsewhere.
