Folio, [20] pp. (A6, B4). Bound in modern quarter calf, raised bands, gilt spine label. Published by Thomas Powell (London), circa 1563. Some occasional browning, the corners of the boards rubbed. A near fine example. This work comprises the Acts of Parliament passed in 1509, the first year of King Henry VIII's reign. Some of the Acts of Parliament passed by Henry VIII in 1509 include: Regulating core industries such as fishing and wool, and measures to help finance the Royal Household. Henry VIII inherited a stable Monarchy from his Father, Henry VII, with the King's finances in a very healthy surplus. Upon becoming King in 1509, Parliament had not been requested for finances for five years. This work is a reprinting in circa 1563, approximately five years into the reign of Elizabeth I, Queen of England from 1558 – 1603. Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII, and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. The Acts of Parliament from 1509 were initially published in 1510 by Richard Pynson. New editions of previous Acts of Parliament were printed with regularity, due to high demand from Tudor officials, legal professionals, and business owners. It was only if they were later repealed, that Acts of Parliament ceased to be in place. The editions produced during the Tudor period are exceptionally scarce to encounter in the rare books trade. From the passing of the 1509 Acts Of Parliament, to the publication of this edition in 1563, the relationship between the Monarch and Parliament radically changed. "Parliament's involvement in making religious and dynastic changes had been firmly established." (Royal.uk.) During Henry VIII's reign, his Parliaments passed a series of critical Acts in the context of British History. For example, from 1518, Thomas Wolsey closed some of the small monastic communities to pay for his new foundations. In 1535-6, a further 200 smaller monasteries were dissolved by statute, followed by the remaining greater houses in 1538-40. Wolsey's successor, Thomas Cromwell, King Henry VIII's chief adviser from 1532, used the powers and anti-clerical attitude of Parliament to ensure a series of Acts were passed to reduce Papal power in England, bringing about the English Reformation.
