The jacket is Good with finger soil, slight age darkening, and light fraying/small chips at the extremities. However it has done its job well in protecting the book which still has most of its new book gloss. No owner's name or bookplate. Pages are crisp, clean and unmarked -- apparently never read. A history of the gift book vogue, their content, publishers, profits, artists and engravers, etc. The Atlantic Souvenir, The Talisman, The Token, The Gift, The Diadem , and The Liberty Bell each merit their own chapter. Also discussed are foreign and minor American examples. Includes an annotated bibliography with 855 entries identifying works by Poe, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Holmes and other luminaries which first appeared in annuals or gift books. Important reference.
