4 pp. ALS To JAMES C. BELL, Conowingo, Maryland, July 7, 1881. VG. With a printed envelope.
Henry Barton Dawson was an American editor, historian, temperance reformer and antiquarian bookseller; James C. Bell, a wealthy industrialist, investor and prominent Cecil County, Maryland landowner.
A revealing and poignant letter thanking Bell for subscribing to Dawson's magazine which leads into a review of the publisher's misfortunes, offering a catalog of health-related issues, the loss of his children, and details about business difficulties.
"The crash in business came; and that was followed by the deaths of our oldest son, aged 28. Our oldest daughter, aged 37, our only grandchild (my idol) ages 21/2, and our youngest daughter, aged nearly 17- all members of our household, and all taken within forty-nine months. My helplessness did not lessen my obligations…Need there be any wonder that I am physically a wreck?"
