Sobre este item
London: Macmillan and Co, 1866. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The first edition of one of the important African travel works by Samuel White Baker, illustrated throughout. The first edition of this work.Complete in two volumes.A geographical look at the great basin of the River Nile at Lake Albert in Uganda, an exciting and explorative work that was widely read in the Victorian era.The River Nile is the longest river in the world.Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece, one colour map, five plates, and in-text illustrations.Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece, six plates, and in-text illustrations.Written by Samuel Baker, who is best known for being the first European to visit Lake Albert. He was an abolitionist, engineer, and big game hunter, and he was the Governor-general of the Equatorial Nile Basin in the nineteenth century. Though he was renowned for being an explorer, he never received quite the same amount of acclamation that his contemporaries did. Queen Victoria refused to meet Baker, due to the way in which he met his wife; he had bought his wife, Florence, as a slave after they had fallen in love.During the Victorian era Baker was one of the greatest explorers of Africa.Collated, Volume I lacks one folding map, which is provided in facsimile. In the original publisher's cloth binding, Volume I has been rebacked with the original boards and spine restored. Externally, generally smart. Some light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Minor marks to the boards and spines. A little wear to the extremities, particularly to Volume I. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots, spots a little heavier to the first and last few pages. Folding map in Volume I is provided in facsimile. Frontispiece of Volume II with a small repair to the reverse. Good
