Sobre este item

St. Loui, 1859. 84pp. Paper wrappers. Wrappers tanned, minor chips to bottom margin. A near fine copy. An inauguration speech by Washington University's first Chancellor, Joseph Gibson Hoyt. In his speech Hoyt emphasizes the need for a well-rounded, liberal arts, education rooted in the classics and foreign languages. Hoyt's hope, and the emphasis of his speech, is that Washington University will serve as a bastion of education in the Western frontier. One of the earliest documents of higher education in the trans-Mississippi. SABIN 33409
