REGNIER DE GRAAF (1641 – 1673) was a Dutch physician and anatomist who made key discoveries in the biology of the reproductive and digestive tracts. He studied medicine in Utrecht and Leiden, submitted his doctoral thesis on the pancreas, and went to France where he obtained his medical degree from the University of Angers. After returning to the Netherlands, since he was a Catholic in a mainly Protestant country, he was unable to follow a university career. After the early death of a son, De Graaf died in 1673 at age 32. The mature stage of the ovarian follicle is called the Graafian follicle in his honor. De Graaf also described the anatomy of the testicles and collected secretions of the gall bladder and the pancreas (all illustrated in the plates).

Suncook, Pembroke, N.H., 1878. 12mo, original russet cloth, gilt title and decorative black stamping on front cover, lower cover with blind-stamped title and ornament. Frontis. portrait engraving, 63 pp., illus. On the morning of October 4, 1875, the beautiful 17-year-old Josie Langmaid did not show up for school. When Pembroke Academy staff notified her family, a search party was assembled. That night the party found her decapitated and violated body in the woods near the school and discovered her head the next morning. Following the initial arrest of innocent parties, the actual murderer was identified as French-Canadian woodcutter Joseph Lapage. Tried and found guilty, he admitted to his crime (as well as a similar murder in Vermont) on March 15th, 1878 and was hung the following day. The town of Pembroke placed a monument to the victim near the murder site, with directions to the sites where her body and head were discovered. Keeler's forty-page poetic eulogy is preceded by a brief account of… Ler mais

No place no date (but London, 1862). 143 pp. (19 x 25,5 cm). As issued, bound by the original simple cord with no wrappers. Uncut. And with the mention "Epreuves" in the top right hand corner. As issued, without preliminary matter. With two small stamps of the "librairie Tross" on the first and last page. So this seems to be a real 'advance copy'. (some dustsoiling).Guiglielmo Libri (1803-1869) left his native Italy in 1832 to start a new life in France and soon obtained a reputation as a scholar and bibliophile. His lasting fame, however, is primarily based on his theft of huge quantities of books and manuscripts. In 1841 he was appointed secretary to a commission to inventory the manuscripts in the French public libraries and began augmenting his own extensive library with purloined volumes of great antiquity and value. During his tenure he sold large amounts of books a.o. to Lord Ashburnam. Eventually he was found out and in 1850 he was sentenced to ten years of hard labour. By this time he had… Ler mais

The son of a rich engineer, Burges trained with Edward Blore (the surveyor to Westminster Abbey) and Matthew Wyatt who was Special Commissioner to the 1851 Great Exhibition. Burges worked closely with Wyatt in assessing designs and entries for the Exhibition, particularly for Pugin's hugely influential Medieval Court. This was to determine the course of Burges's career: from the early 1850s he travelled widely throughout Europe… Ler mais
