This appears to be the edition reviewed in The Gentleman's Magazine for 1808 (volume 78), introducing the "neat diminutive volume" as the production of "the relict of Opie, the late excellent painter...." However, the relict comes into her own in the last sentence: "Mrs. Opie, possessed of a mind disdaining imitation, and conscious of its own resources, has presented the Community with the means of passing a leisure hour innocently and delightfully...."

Large 8vo,k 210 x 130 mms., pp. 718, engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title-page, 7 other engraved plates, , bound in contemporary mottled calf, neatly is rather plainly rebacked, spine gilt lettered, minor soiling or spotting, but a good copy. The list of plates suggest that there should a further one at page 309 not present in this copy, but it appears it is absent from other copies that I have checked. Published first in four volumes. Hannah Maria Jones wrote twenty-three novels during her career, which stretched from 1820 to 1850, yet despite her huge output and massive popularity, only a few reviews of her works have been traced, though this one was reviewed in the Monthly Critical Review, with the reviewer commenting, "The other incidents of this tale, and the other characters, are marked by no features of originality; but the style is better than that of the common class of novels,… Ler mais

Allen, Glasgown [no date] c. 1900]. 8vo, 183 x 113 mms., pp. 136, portrait of author as frontispiece, four other portraits, original decorated cloth. A very good copy. Shorey describes himself on the title- page as "Convert and Helper of Moody and Sankey. Formerly Superintendent of the McAuley Water Street Mission, U. S. A." Shorey notes in his introduction of "three thousand copies" has now been modified in this second edition. The first edition was simply titled What Jesus is Doing. Shorey was born in 1826, and the first edition is located in two American libraries: Biola University Library and Moody Bible Institute Library. No copy of this second edition traced in any online library database.

Glasgow, David Robertson...., 1853, 1846. 6 volumes bound in 2. 16mo, 118 x 74 mms., pp. lxxvi, 124 [3] - 124, [3] - 124; xiv, 124, [3] - 182, x, 191 [192 blank], each part with separate paginations, but general title pages dated 1853, with extra woodcut vignette portraits at the front of each volume, and a separate title page to the last part, dated 1846, facsimile signatures of authors in the text, bound in original sage green cloth, stamped in blind to sides and pictorial gilt to spines; a little shaken in casing and cloth slightly faded, but a good set. This is the second collected edition of these works, comprising the first five series of the anthology, together with the supplemental 'Songs for the Nursery', which includes the immortal nursery rhyme 'Wee Willie Winkie'. FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [iv], 56, title-page in red and black, uncut, original boards, with printed label on front cover, hand-written paper label on spine; slightly soiled, spine repaired at early stage. With the bookplate, on front pastedown, stating that this volume was "Presented to the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution by Frederick Shum, Esq. F. S. A.", with Shum's name neatly added in manuscript. In 1814 the book Who Wrote Cavendish's Life of Wolsey? was published anonymously in a small print-run of just one hundred copies. The inscription in the copy on offer, however, gives the author's identity: "T. Broadhurst / 1816 / from the Rev. J. Hunter, / the Author". Here we see the author, the Rev. Edinburgh, Printed by Evan Tyler, printer to the Kings most excellent Majestie, 1644. 24mo, 108 x 48 mms., pp. [xxii], 230 [231 - 246 additional text and index], contemporary dark olive sheepskin, gilt ornaments (faded) on each cover, title and date on spine; title-page affected by ink burn, mostly in the blank space between "Hebrew" and "Newly set forth," text a bit fingered and thumbed, lower joint very slightly cracked, bookplate dated 1850 of James Dix, Bristol on front paste-down end-paper, ownership autograph "E. Gordon Duff/ Nov. 1917" on recto of front free end-paper. Edward Gordon Duff (1863 - 1924), a bibliographer and book collector, compiled the first catalogue of the John Rylands Library in Manchester. ESTC R231218 locates copies in BL, NLS, Bodleian, and John Rylands. Tyler also issued another similar title in 1644, The Psalmes of David in Meeter and Prose, ESTC R170558, 16mo, pp. [480], with locations in BL, NLS, Bodleian; Huntington, NYPL.

Heptinstall, for the Company of Stationers; And are to be sold by Samuel Sprint..., 1697. 8vo, 172 x 112 mms., pp. [x], 288, with pages 287 - 288 missing but with xerox copy included, engraved frontispiece, music throughout text, late 18th century sheepskin, recent plain reback; small repair to leaf A1, but a good copy with the florid ownership inscription "William Boyer/ His Booke 1699" and further inscriptions in his hand on the recto of the frontispiece, the ownership inscription "Edith Mary Oakley/ her book/ August 1928" on the recto of the front free end-paper. Playford (1623 - 1686) first published this in 1677, and he composed at least one tune, "Bristol," that was included in his edition of the Psalms. After Playford's death, the second edition was published in 1695 by Henry Playford, his only surviving son. The last edition that I have traced is the 20th, published in 1757. FIRST LONDON EDITION. 12mo, 183 x 110 mms., pp. [iv] v - vii [viii blank], 208, including half-title, bound in 19th century half roan, marbled boards, top edge gilt, title in gilt on spine; binding a bit worn, but a good copy. ESTC notes, "On the intimacy and alleged marriage between Ann Whitby and Sir William Wolseley." The Monthly Review noticed the work and commented, "This recites the scandalous conduct of a lady who had the wickedness to marry a third husband, the second still living: both marriages falling within the space of one month. The law-proceedings consequent hereupon, fill the greatest part of the book; which has this singular circumstance attending it, that whereas many romances have imposed upon the public by title-pages contrived with design to pass them for true history; so here we have a true history with the title of a novel; which has led many into the mistaken supposition of its being a work of imagination."… Ler mais

G. Anderson, Sq[q]/ with the Authors/ compts." Charles Tovey (1812 - 1888) distinguished himself both as wine merchant and author. Born in Bristol, he spent his entire life there, and announced himself as wine merchant in the Bristol Mercury on 29 November 1834 as "already in business as an importer of wines and spirits, with a great variety of stock in bonded cellars. Sarah Stickney (1799 - 1872), the daughter of the Quaker farmer and his first wife, Esther Richardson, married the widower William Ellis (1794–1872), Congregational minister, missionary, and author on 23 May 1837. After her marriage, she always used her married name for her publications. Of an edition published in 1839 in New York, the journal Biblical Repository and Classical Review, stated, "This book is doubtless in the very first class of its kind. The reputation of the author is established for beauty of style, good sense, and purity and elevation of sentiment." Combe (1742 - 1823) wrote this work when he was a part of Pitt's ministry, charged with the task of writing favourable commentaries on government activities. There were several editions of this work in 1792, and this one, without place of publication or publisher, is possibly a Scottish piracy.

Large 8vo, pp. lv [lvi engraved music], 435 [436 Errata], engraved plate of music between pp. xii and xiii, uncut, later 19th century full calf, gilt spine, gilt dentelles. A fine copy. The first meeting of the "Glee Club" was held in Newcastle Coffee House in London, on 22 December 1787. At the time of compiling this work, there were forty-four members of one kind or another.
