Bound by John Field (with binder's ticket) in modern full yellow water buffalo with blind rolled borders and red spine label with gilt title and new endpapers. Provenance: Henri Milne Edwards, Library of Henry and Virginia Walton Harry and Virginia Walton were lifelong residents of Covington, Virginia, a small town in the Allegheny Mountains. Harry was a graduate of Lynchburg College, and Virginia was a graduate of the Lynchburg General School of Nursing. It was established by brothers Egidio and Aristide Bonella in the early twentieth century in Italy (ca. 1930). It has continued to be a family-run business for three generations, and remains one of the leading producers of religious images in the world.

Author and date in neat contemporary ink to front cover. A very good copy of this scarce early address on the state of the pre-Civil War Episcopal Church by the (then provisional) Bishop of New York and founder of the Church of St. John the Divine. One of his earliest works as a (provisional) bishop.

A very good copy of this scarce pamphlet which contains a discussion of Sheppard v. Bennett, an English case regarding Anglican doctrines relating to the sacraments in light of recent American cases, from a decidedly "evangelical" American perspective.

Joseph Hall (1574–1656) was one of the earliest English satirists, an influential Anglican bishop and devotional author. His contemporaries also knew him as a high-profile controversialist of the early 1640s, although when less visible, he tended to the “via media” made famous by Richard Hooker, the noted Anglican churchman.
