First English printing of Gamow's paper announcing the same. This discovery led Gamow to later determine how quantum tunneling allows nuclear fusion to occur and how that powers the sun and stars. 1020 pp. 4to. Blue library binding, ex-Library with Royal College Naval Library bookplate on front pastedown, borrower's card slot glued to front pastedown, due date sheet pasted to first free endpaper. No other library markings present other than the number "53" in white ink at base of spine. Clean within.

Sin-Itiro Tomonaga (1906-1979) was the co-winner with Richard Feynman and Julian Swinger of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on the QED (Quantum Electrodynamics) which describes how light and matter interact. xii, 313, xi, 474 pp. 8vo. Volume I: Slight wear to dust jacket, minor rubbing at corners, now in mylar cover. Volume II: Wear and scuffing, including a 2-1/2" closed tear at top of front panel, spotting along inside edge of rear panel, now in mylar cover. Both volumes have red cloth boards with gold embossed titling, very clean and tight inside and out.

An exceedingly scarce volume on Maine's sizeable lime industry, much of what was based around Rockland, Maine. 331 pp. 8vo. Clean, crisp copy with dust jacket in mylar cover. Previous owner's name in ink on first free endpaper.

Title page and plates hand colored and depict French soldiers in various battles from the Crusades through World War I and including Joan of Arc. Original folio with some staining to front and rear, colored illustration on cover board of a French World War I helmet within a wreath, original ribbon ties in France's colors of red, white and blue in original condition and still bright.

Although other Secretaries of the Department of the Interior wrote books, this is the only one released to a popular audience during the Secretary's tenure. A national bestseller, it became one of the imporant books of the environmental movement. Stewart Udall (1920-2010) has the distinction of being the longest tenured Secretary of the Interior, serving the entirety of both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson's presidencies. Inscribed by Udall on the first free endpaper in the year of publication.
