Montanary was an influential astronomer and lecturer in Bologna & Padova. His work was strongly influenced by the ‘Disputationes adversus astrologiam divinatricem’ by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and worked to exclude astrology from university teaching.

Original dark grey cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in blind, very minor bumping to corners, and a small marginal damp stain to 1 cm of fore-edge. A fine survey of 19th-century ornamental French ironwork. The four parts are titled, respectively, "La Serrurerie Moderne. Grilles. Balcons. Marquises. Serres. Clotures. Panneaux de Portes. Ornements", "Nouveaux Travaux exécutés dans les Quartiers neufs", "Constructions en tous Genres Exécutées d' après les Dessins des principaux Architectes ou Ingenieurs. Combles pour Magasins, Ateliers, Hangards etc. etc" and "Marquises. Verhendas. Charpentes. Planchers. Combles. Escaliers. Galeries. Marchés." Very few copies seem to have survived and this work is rare in the market, this being undoubtedly one of the finest examples to survive.

First French edition of this "Vie de Louis XVI", initially "produced in Regensburg, by German compositors, who did not know French" and therefore "inevitably very incorrect", according to the note by the publisher, who also points out that the success of this work led to 9 counterfeit editions, but imperfect compared to this one. A biographical work that takes the side of King Louis XVI and denounces the atrocities committed against him during the Revolution

Woodcut ornamental border to title, red rubricated margins, attractive period gilt gauffered edges, later half calf, Paris, 1552. An excellent copy. A rare copy of the first edition. During the sixteenth century the syphilis epidemic swept Europe, and its treatment was one of the most lucrative forms of medical practice of the day. De Hery was the first in France to promote the mercurial treatment of syphilis. He followed Francis I to Italy after the battle of Pavia to treat soldiers suffering from the disease. 'De Hery made a fortune from treating syphilitic patients. He recommended mercurial inunctions and guaiac internally' (Garrison-Morton).

A notably clean and bright copy aside from the few mentioned faults. No damp staining and no foxing. A rare work, with none at auction since 1965
