This book was the winner of the Virigina Commonwealth University Series in poetry in 1979, an AWP award series selection, and is Larsen's first book. A really nice Hollins University association copy (a distinguished creative writing program): Larsen received her MA from Hollins in 1972, and would have overlapped with Dillard there at the time before either had published a book (Dillard received her BA and MA from Hollins in '68 and '69). NY: Boni & Liverwright, 1911. First thus. Hardcover. Very good. Wallace Stegner's copy with his ownership signature on the flyleaf. The second issue in the year of its original publication. Dreiser's second novel and his first commercial success, Jennie Gerhardt is described as "a powerful study of a woman tragically compromised by birth and fate.  . . . Jennie has an illegitimate child by one man and lives out of wedlock with another--but Dreiser does not condemn her for her behavior." Stegner wrote an introduction to Dreiser for the American Literary Masters series. A very good book in red cloth with rubbing to corners and spine edges, lacking a dust jacket. A nice association between towering figures in 20th century American fiction .

Inscribed on the half-title page by John McPhee: "For Stephanie Schlant, on the occasion of a fine evening in Denville, Yolanda and John McPhee, 12/19/76." "Yolanda" is in John McPhee's hand. An association copy, inscribed to the stepdaughter of senator/basketball star Bill Bradley, who was of course the subject of McPhee's first book, A Sense of Where You Are. The first twenty pages of this Reader are an excerpt from A Sense of Where You Are. Presumably signed at Bradley's home in Denville, since Stephanie Schlant was a teenager at the time. Very good plus/near fine with a light specking of dust/foxing to the top of the text block, a minor dust smudge to lower text block corner, a few bumps to board edges, and minor softening to a few corners. Inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page in blue ink: "For Bess Kirnie [sp?], with greetings from Trail Wood--Edwin Way Teale, November 21, 1960." Trail Wood was his farm, much written about, in Connecticut. Uncommon signed, as is pretty much all of Teale's books. Part of The American Seasons series, four books, that Edwin Way Teale is best known for (the fourth, Wandering through Winter, won the Pulitzer Prize).  Here Teale meanders from New England along the Great Lakes down to Colorado, and as the jacket argues, "Altogether is makes as pleasant a summer as you have ever spent." A near fine book with a bit of toning and faint foxing to text block faces; in a very good jacket with a touch of rumpling to spine, some loss to upper spine, and wear to corners.

NY: Houghton Mifflin, 1943. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Ward, Lynn. Association copy, inscribed on half title page: "Cordially inscribed for Jean Hersholt by Donald Culross Peattie." Uncommon signed. Hersholt (1886-1956) was an actor best known for starring on the long-running radio series *Dr. Christian* and in the film *Heidi.* He served as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and he was also a book collector: some of his books, particularly his Hans Christian Anderson collection, are now held in the Library of Congress. This book has his signed bookplate on the front pastedown. Peattie is best known as a naturalist-author, but this book, a kind of travelogue through time in America, likely represents his wartime patriotic effort (indeed, the rear flap is printed with a small "For victory, buy United States war bonds and stamps" advertisement); still his interest in the wilds persists in his profiles of pioneering types like Daniel Boone, Jim… Ler mais

Jean Craighead George, May 7, 1983." Laid in is a Ex Libris bookplate from Livingston that was once affixed to front pastedown.  Jean Craighead George was a prolific children's book author, most of her book's about animal life. She's best known for the Newberry Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and for the classic My Side of the Mountain about a boy who ditches NYC for the Catskills wilderness. Her influence on the America's youth appreciation of the natural world was and is substantial.
