Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1862. First. HB. Overall VG. Book plate from historical society on front pastedown, blind stamp to title page./No Jacket. SIGNED by Major Edward Lewis Joy, 36th Iowa Infantry Volunteers. Joy was evidently a line officer, took a Majority in 1864 and served in the judge advocates office. He lived in Ottumwa and died in 1892. This is a very rare volume as it SUPPLEMENTS the common Evolution manual. There is no record of this volume in any standard bibliography.

NY: Van Norstrand, 1864. First. Hard Bound. Tight and square. Insect damage to front gutter, very top of spine, and small spot on rear board./None. Author was General in U.S. Second Infantry. Smallish (6 1/4" X 4 1/4") red cloth bound book full of illustrations. Has a stamped name on the ffep, Paul W. Mahoney. Comprehensive Table of Contents/Index.

NY: Putnam, 1896. First. Hard Cover. VG. Minimal ex-lib from the Fort McPherson Army Post library. Two annotations on the title page (see photo) is all that can be seen./None.. LIMITED TO 750 COPIES. A lengthy narrative of 900 pages counting the detailed index. All you would ever want to know about this famed Union Army Corps and, at the same time, the history of the Army of the Potomac. Nevins I-148: "Most comprehensive Corps history of the War..." Dornbusch III-1327. The book requires many maps that are all present. Same for the many portraits of unit personnel. It is in excellent condition considering its size, no "big bookitis." Handsome in royal blue cloth with gold embossing.

Baltimore: Day Printing, 1932. First. Hard Cover. VG+/None. Super narrative about the Battle of Monocacy which is an 1864 engagement that has not been written about to much. However, his Union bias and conclusions may be questionable. The battle "...was more decisive than Antietam, Shiloh or Gettysburg." Well, I'm not sure about that!!" Nonetheless, a very detailed and well organized presentation with excellent research backing his tale. A not very common book.

Philadelphia: Hubbard Brothers, 1888. First. Hard Cover. Pages toned evenly due to type of paper but supple and no signs of brittleness. Square and tight./None. The 15th West Virginia Infantry served near home but made excursions into the Shenandoah Valley, particularly during Early's 1864 invasion. The unit suffered heavily at Cedar Mountain. There is a Company B roster listed. Not found in the common bibliographies.

St. Louis: Press A.R. Fleming, 1909. First. HB. Decorative front board. Hinges perfect, colors vivid./No Jacket. THIS A RARE ONE, CONTAINS LETTERS FROM SOLDIERS SERVING IN THE 3RD AND 4TH NORTH CAROLINA INFANTRY. THERE IS A LENGTHY INSCRIPTION ON THE FFEP AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR IN 1918.

Mobile, AL: Gossip Printing, 1890. Author's Autograph Edition. Bug blemishes to boards. Rear hinge repaired. Even toning to pages. Lettering faded but readable./No Jacket.. SIGNED BY DELEON UNDER HIS PICTURE FRONTISE. ITC- 40 : "...a journalist who was a good observer of Confederate life." Nevins II-218. Coulter- 123. SP . Howes 241.

Providence: Snow & Farnham, 1898. First. HB. Book Xlib with numbers on the spine and a card pocket in the rear. Otherwise VG, with slight fading to top of front board. Striking gold lettering on the brilliant scarlet cloth boards./No Jacket. ONE OF THE FEW REGIMENTALS WRITTEN ABOUT AFRO-AMERICAN SERVICE. THIS UNIT SERVED MOSTLY IN LOUISIANA. BOOK IS FULL OF PORTRAIT PHOTOS WITH NOT ONE AFRO AMERICAN IMAGE. THE BOOK'S PREFACE IMPLIES ONLY 200 COPIES WERE FUNDED BY THE STATE LEGISLATURE.

Baltimore: Lord Baltimore Press, 1900. First. HB.Yellow Cloth. Cloth soiled as usual. Lettering still very good. Unusual bio of a man on front pastedown that likely was the prior owner's father./No Jacket.. There are 86 pages devoted to the Civil War. Other chapters deal with the Indian Wars against the Apache and ends with the Santiago, Cuba, campaign. Interestingly, the 6th was next to T.R.s Rough Riders but got scant attention. The book contains a record of Private John G. Thomas, 6th Cav, who served during the Civil War. It is tipped in on the front pastedown. The book is signed by Albert G. Thomas in 1900, likely the son of John. John served in the East at Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Mine Run, North Anna, Cold Harbor and several cavalry raids in 1863-4. He also was a POW at Belle Isle and Libby. Book came with a roster of survivors of the Sixth Regiment, dated 1/1/1900. Nice illustrations inside.

Baltimore: Green-Lucas, 1920. First. HB. Minor color change on pastedowns from the dust jacket. Hinges tight./G+. Some staining on the spine and around the edges.. Dame, William Meade. BOOK IN A SCARCE DJ. Author a member of the Richmond Howitzers, a famous artillery unit that served in the Army of Northern Virginia. Saw action in virtually all battles from First Manassas through Appomatox.
