Hartford: E.T. Pease & Co, 1854. Softcover. Very good. Pamphlet (approximately 6 3/4" x 9"), stitched as issued. 51pp. with illustrations. Original pictorial printed paper wrappers with publisher's advertisement on rear wrapper. In 1854, a huge boiler explosion at a Hartford factory left 19 dead and another 23 injured. A local publisher issued this pamphlet shortly thereafter, gathering a number of accounts of the tragedy along with the texts of sermons delivered by two local clergymen on the meaning of it all. Contemporary owner's signature at the top right hand corner of front wrapper. Modest soiling to front wrapper and spine beginning to chip. Still a very good copy.

Pamphlet, 5" x 7 3/8", 52 pp. Inscription on rear wrapper, dated June 1870, indicating the formation of a specific corporation. A handbook for forming private corporations in the state of New York. Passed Frebruary 17, 1848 With The Amendments. . . . . . To Which Are Added Notes, Forms and an Index. Rear wrapper is chipped and along with evidence of tape markings and residue that do not affect the text. Foot of spine slightly chipped. Somewhat soiled and creased throughout.

In 1838, Massachusetts made fundamental changes to its bankruptcy laws, which included the abolition of prison for insolvent debtors. Cushing prepared this detailed analysis of the new law and outlined ways in which it could be implemented. With an Outline of the System Thereby Introduced and Forms of Proceeding Under the Same. Spine professionally rebacked with spotting and wear to the boards. Light foxing throughout the text.

Inscription on front wrapper in ink: "Charter Franklin Fire Insurance" along with the number "17. " Sabin 61675; not in Shaw & Shoemaker. By the terms of this document, shareholders had to be US citizens, directors were barred from borrowing funds from the corporation, and no more than $10,000 of annual income could be generated from any one real estate investment held by the company. A fascinating view of corporate governance in a major financial institution of the early 19th century. Chipping over spine; sewing going with signature loose in wrappers; Title page has three-digit stamped number with pencilled notation in upper margin. Rear wrapper has a four-digit number at top left. Nevertheless, this is a remarkably good copy of a very scarce publication.

Augusta [Maine]: Fuller & Fuller, printers, 1856. Softcover. Near fine. Pamphlet (5 1/4" x 8 3/8"), stitched as issued. 10, [2]pp. Original tan-colored, printed paper wrappers. In an effort to regulate alcohol, the Maine legislature passed an act that would require local liquor "manufacturers" to post a $1,000 bond. Retailers would be required to post a $400 bond. The act also gave local towns, cities and plantations powers to limit the number of liquor retailers in their areas. There were exceptions, however, relating to medications and to alcohol imported from abroad.

Privately printed reminiscences about the utopian community at Fruitlands in 1843, which was led by the Alcotts. A portion of the text originally appeared in the New England magazine. Paper label on spine a bit chipped. Otherwise, near fine.

This was a sermon deliverd by Jonathan Edwards the Younger (1745 - 1801) who served as president of Union College and was a noted theologian in his own right. By . . . . . Pastor of a Church in New-Haven. Scattered spots. Trimmed closely but text is unaffected. A good + copy.

Very good. 8vo. pamphlet, stitched as issued. 84pp. followed by 4pp. of advertisements for inebriate asylums and sanitariums. Printed paper wrappers. This pamphlet documents a very early gathering of American physicians who were devoted to investigating the causes of alcoholism and to developing effective treatments. As chairman of the association, Dr. Willard Parker opened with an address that defined alcoholism as a disease that could be cured. "It is the object of this meeting to inquire into the best mode of treating inebriety. " The sessions that followed included a number of essays and papers on the topic as well as decisions on a variety of organizational matters. This is a very scarce item that does not appear in Worldcat. Light soiling to wrappers with a few tiny chips and creasing at the corners. A very good copy.

This is still the standard work on the American fur trade. Hinges beginning to crack on volume I. Minor rippling to cloth on volume II. A few bumps and marks to binding on volume III. Ex-lib with light residue of call numbers on lower spines and bookplates on front pastedowns.

The preface indicates that the book's "aim is to combine wit and humour, without indelicacy; to excite pleasure in the mind, without leaving an injurious impression on the heart. "By the author of the American Chesterfield. "Spine is re-backed. Covers show moderate wear. Foxing throughout the text and pastedowns. Some pencil and ink marks on front printed label. Previous owners signatures on front pastedown and flyleaves.

Washington, D.C: Wm. Ballantyne & Sons, 1898. First edition. Softcover. Very good. 16mo. with printed paper wrappers. 94pp. plus inserted portrait of Stewart. Title page has the inscription: "Compliments of the author Wm. M. Stewart, June 15th, 1898. " Stewart was a U. S. Senator from the State of Nevada. His treatise contains chapters on money, value, prices, bimetallism, foreign commerce, labor and currency. Wrappers lightly soiled with small chip to the top left hand corner of rear wrapper and some offsetting to the front wrapper. Text is clean.

Original green cloth binding with bevelled boards and gilt decorations on front board and spine. 7 1/4" x 4 3/4". Brown coated endpapers and red colored edges. Half title, blank page, 12 pp of undated ads on orange paper, title page, copy right page, 309 pp. Inscription on front flyleaf reads: "Henry Applegate, Jr & Fred M Stocking". Francis, a former secretary of the Bank of England, prepared this book for the layperson. It makes for an interesting and easy read about a wide variety of subjects surrounding insurance.Tanning to title page and blank page preceding ads due to offsetting from orange paper. Very light shelf wear. A very nice copy.

New York: [E. Hutchinson], 1848. Softcover. Very good. Pamphlet (5 5/8" x 9 1/4"). 64pp. Sewn as issued with printed papers wrappers. Woodcut of a "Cholera Scene" on rear wrapper. Front wrapper has the imprint: New-York: E. Hutchinson, 1849. This is a popular survey of the state of knowledge about cholera in the 1840's. It also includes a history of outbreaks of the disease both within the United States and internationally. The author is candid about understanding the causes of cholera, admitting that the causes are "unknown to us. " However, he also reports "that is in the atmosphere we have every reason to believe. . . " Medical remedies recommended by doctors were equally misguided as they included bleeding, dry friction and opium, among with others. Some chips to the spine and few spots and nicks to the printed wrappers. Text is largely clean; although a few pages are either tanned or have occasional spotting that does not affect… Ler mais

[New York]: Printed by James & John Harper, 1820. Very good. Broadsheet (approximately 8" x 13"). Recto contains a printed extract of the minutes from the 1820 Yearly Meeting of Women Friends of New York. The name "Abigail Evernghim, Clerk. " is lso printed at the bottom. The verso reads: "MINUTES of the Yearly Meeting. 1820." along with the name and address of the printer. In early 19th century America, the Society of Friends or Quakers dealt with organizational and other church issues in Quarterly and Yearly meetings. Each Society would hold separate meetings for men and women, and most actions required the agreement of both in order to become effective. In 1820, the women Quakers of New York wrestled with the "subject of company keeping and joining in marriage with those not of our Society. " It appears that the topic was so prominent and devisive that minutes relating to this issue were published separately in a broadsheet. The… Ler mais
