Stitched as issued, remains of original blue paper wrappers. Some soiling to outer leaves, a little creasing to corners. The rare third issue of this guidebook, first published 1796 and reissued with a new title-page in 1799 and again as here. ESTC locates just three copies of this version (Cambridge, Oxford, UCLA). Dublin: New Writers’ Press, 1969. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 250 COPIES, large 8vo, pp. [ii], 11, [1]. Original green wrappers printed in black. Wrappers somewhat sunned around the edges, corners lightly bumped. The first printing of the first published book by the Irish poet Augustus Young (b. 1943).

Both pamphlets a little creased and soiled, staples rusted. Two pamphlets by poet, classicist and, between 1942 and 1945, leader of the SNP, Douglas Young (1913-1973). In 1943 Young was between prison terms for ‘his refusal of both military and industrial wartime conscription for the purposes of raising the topic of Scottish independence in courtroom tribunals’ (McCaffrey, ‘The Adjacent Kingdom of England’, Études écossaises 17, p. 88) - he argued unsuccessfully that Scots could not be conscripted to fight abroad under the 1707 Act of Union. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, black morocco label, top edge gilt. Some scattered soiling, one leaf creased. A little rubbed. Armorial bookplate of Hugh W. Young of Burghead to rear pastedown, inscription to title-page of third pamphlet neatly crossed out. The author’s own copy of three short papers on archaeological findings in the Pictish site in Burghead, Moray. The second and third papers here are reprinted from the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Library Hub records just two copies, at NLS and Newcastle, both of which are the three pamphlets bound together as here, suggesting they were issued together despite the range of dates.
