Dustjacket price-clipped with very slight wear to top spine-tip, bright and without tears. Overall Very Good in Very Good. A key figure in the Irish modernist movement, Flann O'Brien counted James Joyce, Graham Greene, and Dylan Thomas amongst his admirers. The Further Cuttings from Cruiskeen Lawn is a hilarious selection of O'Brien's satirical writings taken from his column in the Irish Times, covering the the post-war period of 1947-1957.

Spine sunned, and worn at tips' corners rubbed. Endpapers and half-title a little toned otherwise contents clean; no annotation or inscriptions. A Good copy. Elliot's famous horror novel of occult possession in which the local Reverend is possessed by the Devil.

Newcastle upon Tyne; W, E & H Mitchell, 1832., 1832. Single sheet approximately 42 cm x 28 cm with headings printed in bold. Horizontal folding creases; small nick at one crease. Sets out the laws prohibiting the "wandering abroad" and rough living of any individual without "any visible means of subsistence" and also individuals gathering alms or charitable contributions of any kind. The punishment for such transgressions was up to 3 months hard labour at the House of Correction, and anyone was enabled to apprehend offenders against the Act to be dealt with by a Justice of the Peace. The background to the announcement is the 1832 Miners' Strike, reminding both striking miners and benefactors making charity collections on their behalf that they were breaking the law and could expect no mercy from the authorities; eventually the miners capitulated, faced with starvation, and the strike ended. Newcastle upon Tyne; Thomas Oliver, 1844., 1844. Large, hand-coloured, landscape map approx. 119 cm x 89 cm, engraved by W. H. Lizars of Edinburgh, dissected into 32 parts, laid onto linen, and folded into green leather boards decorated in blind. The area covered extends from Walker estate in the east to Benwell and Fenham in the west, and from Kenton and Gosforth on the north side to Dunston and the Sunderland Turnpike on the south, covering an area of over 8,000 acres. Scale : 10 inches to a mile. Each township is dilineated with hand-colouring. The "Reference" volume: octavo, pp. viii, 104, in the publisher's original cream printed thin card wraps. Map and "Reference" housed together in felt-lined bespoke half-calf clam-shell box, with 5 raised bands and gilt titles to black labels to spine and brown buckram-covered boards. Engraved frontispiece depicting Newcastle Cathedral, vignette to title page and extra-illustrated with three plates of Newcastle caricatures. In an unusual geometric and lattice patterned binding of full bottle green calf with gilt rolls, gilt ornaments and gilt spine title. Upper joint cracked with minor loss (1cm). Rubbed edges. Small closed tear to titlepage (repaired) and leaf B8. Some toning to pages, predominantly prelims. This lively collection includes Oliver's most well loved song "Newcassel Props" along with "Newcastle Wonders" and other riotous songs in the Geordie dialect. Extra-illustrated with three plates tipped in at "Newcassel Props" depicting the local eccentrics described in the song; Cull Billy, Captain Benjamin Starkey, and Blind Wullie. Reprinted in 1829 and recently by the British Library. COPAC lists three institutional copies only. Rare.

Publisher's original olive green finely reeded cloth with gilt titles to spine and arabesque design in blind to boards; primrose yellow endpapers. Spine lightly toned, with minor wear at tips and 1 cm split at lower front joint; boards a little bruised with wear to edge. A slightly shaken copy with weak inner hinges. Map repaired at hinge only, with browned adhesive tape; initials tidily inscribed to front paste-down otherwise contents clean and bright. A Good copy. Scarce, especially with the handsome Map which is usually lacking, which features a large vignette of the "Centaur" locomotive with tender, pulling five carriages.
