There is minor bumping to the top spine edge of vols 1 and 3, and vol 3 also has slight bumping to the external corners. There are minor white marks on the spine of vols 1 and 3. There is slight spotting to the top edge of the text block of each volume. Internally, all three vols are clean and bright and tightly bound. There are no inscriptions.

Cambridge University Press; first edition, 1973. Original pale blue boards with some bumping at top and bottom of spines and minor shelfwear along the bottom edges. Internally, both vols are clean and bright and tightly bound, with no inscriptions. The red paper wrappers are price clipped, and have moderate sunning to the spines; there is moderate rubbing at both ends of the spines and light rubbing at the corners of both jackets, and very slight creasing at the foot of the rear flap on vol 2.

Oxford University Press; first edition, 1988. Very good plus condition. The jacket has (very) minor rubbing to top edge of spine and a partial and faint horizontal crease near the top edge of the front cover and the very slightest of small bumps to the top right corner. The boards are clean and bright. Internally, the pages are clean and bright and fresh, and tightly bound.

Harvard University Press; first edition, 1972. Review copy sent by the Times Literary Supplement to the writer and reviewer Morchard Bishop (Oliver Stonor); contains four scraps of paper with notes handwritten in pencil (presumably by the reviewer), plus the original slip sent by the publishers to the TLS dated 19 April 1973. The book is in very good plus condition, with just very minor bumping to top edge of spine, and some slight spotting on the top edge of the text block. The jacket is slightly discoloured at the spine and is very slightly rubbed along bottom edge of spine and at outward top corners but overall is in very good plus condition. Internally, the book is clean and bright and tightly bound.

Hamish Hamilton, London; first edition, 1954. Jacket tanned and spotted at spine , with minor chipping to top and bottom of spine and to each of the four corners; price clipped; boards are cloth bound in blue with just some slight rubbing at the edges; some minor spotting to edges of text block. Internally, the book is in very good condition, clean and tightly bound.

Boards have very slight bumps at foot of spine and very slight rubbing at top of spine; jacket is very slightly rubbed along top edge and has very slight mark and two small dents (possibly from original manufacture) towards the foot of the rear. Inside, the book is clean and bright and fresh, and tightly bound. Overall, a very attractive copy.

Very slight bumping to both ends of spine, and to corners of boards; very slight spotting to top of text block; jacket has minor damage at the top edge, with small chips at top right of front cover and top right of spine, and various small tears across top of spine and one small tear on top edge of back cover; jacket now safely preserved in protective wrapping; jacket not price clipped. Pages clean and tightly bound.

Very minor spotting to top edge of text block; the jacket has very minor creasing on one small section of the bottom front edge and the slightest of small tears at the top reverse edge and some very minor marks on the back and otherwise is in extremely good condition; the jacket is in protective wrapping and is not price clipped. The dark blue boards are in excellent condition, with nothing but a few very faint etched lines at the back, and one at the front, which are not echoed in the jacket and which may have been caused during the original production process. Internally the book is extremely clean, bright and fresh, and tightly bound. There are no inscriptions. The jacket has the very faintest of rubbing on the top right corner of the front but is otherwise unmarked.

Oxford University Press (Clarendon Press), 1948. Dark blue boards have some bumping at lower and upper edges of spine and light rubbing at the corners. There is minor scuffing on the edge of the rear board of vol 1 and on the edges of both boards of vol 2; vol 2 has some superficial damage to the boards at the rear hinge. The endpapers are slightly browned. Internally, both vols are clean and bright and tightly bound with no markings or inscriptions. There are no dustjackets.

Both vols have minor bumping at top and foot of spine. There is minor bumping to the internal corners and the tops of the text blocks are discoloured by the dust of ages. Internally, the pages are clean and bright. A former owner's name (W. W. Ross) is inscribed neatly in pencil on the front endpaper of both vols. The bindings are tight, although the front endpaper of vol 1 has separated slightly from the half-title page.

There is a small area of minor spotting on the righthand edge of the text block. Internally, the pages are clean and firmly bound. There are no inscriptions. The jacket is also in VG+ condition. There is very minor edgewear to both ends of the spine and some minor creasing towards the top of the spine. There is a Book Society wrap-around paper banner, and the whole is nicely protected in a plastic wrapper.

There is minor wear at the top edge of the spine, a small chip to the top edge of the front panel and a small hole on the righthand side of the back panel. There is rubbing at the flap edges, which have two small tears (one with very minor loss). The jacket is not price clipped.
