A divisive figure throughout his career, Roy Campbell was a South African poet, critic, satirist and translator. Once touted as a rival to T. S. Carey, according to the publisher's advertisement, directs her attention 'chiefly to the habits, appearance, customs, dress, and conditions of her own sex'. She includes informative and entertaining observations on female education, governesses, dress for ladies, the extreme distress of the poor, and French booksellers who 'express no admiration for Mrs. Radcliffe's romances, and seem to wonder that we should find amusement in what excites the very unpleasurable sensation of fear'. .
