Signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To my friend Arnold Sorsby, with kind regards, Alexander Fleming 1953." A Vintage glossy Photograph. 8 x 6.5 inches. Very good. Alexander Fleming was a Scottish bacteriologist (1881–1955) who shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his role in the discovery and isolation of penicillin. Original vellum a little rubbed and lightly marked, browning to the endpapers as usual, wanting ties. A very good copy.
Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale "travelled often to the continent and was clearly influenced by the fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century art which she saw on visits to Italy. There were further exhibitions of her works at Leighton House in 1904, with a catalogue containing appreciative remarks by George Frederic Watts, and at Dowdeswell's in 1905 and 1909. The corners of the binding a little rubbed, the hinges reinforced, clean internally. A very good copy.
This work is one of the finest productions on Spanish naval architecture and shipbuilding from the 16th to 18th century, and particularly documents the architecture of the old Spanish wooden battleships and galleons. It was following a series of conferences held at the Ateneo de Madrid in May 1914 that this work came to be published (Palau 1, 521.)
