[ESTC T101517].Provenance : Bookplate of Hugh Cecil, Earl of Lonsdale. RARE - although there are a few copies of the USA first, we can find no copies of the UK precedent at all. Note Lambart was an Irishman with a long career in the British Army, reaching the rank of Lieutenant General, and holding his commission until the end of his life. With its Appendix of Moral Observations, it was used as an instructional textbook by both sides during the Revolutionary War. Evans 14815; Sabin 53405.

An iconic work on gas-light technology which did much towards London and other major cities installing it to light houses, streets etc. The fine plates depict machinery, apparatus, and light fittings & chandeliers.

Complete text including the subscribers list. Contemporary panelled calf, gilt. Provenance: Richard William Penn, Earl Howe (armorial bookplate); catalogue description laid down on front free endpaper. As often the plates with issue points seem to be mixed. They are in the following states : "Winchester College, from the Meadow" dated Jan. 1, 1815 (1st state); "Westminster School-Room" with bareheaded Masters (1st state); and "Charter-House, from the Play-Ground" depicting a cricket match (later state) .
