Two volume set in red cloth with gilt over black spine lettering, large folding maps at the end of each volume. Good to very good condition with some transparent spotting to the lower front cover of the first volume, otherwise very good with good hinges, firm text blocks, clean pages with a name and date neatly written on each front free endpaper, no other markings.. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Inked name (in both volumes) on half title page: William Shack (1923-2000), professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, and dean emeritus of the graduate division. A prominent scholar of African cultures, Shack was known internationally for his pioneering fieldwork on the Gurage people of Ethiopia and for a series of books on African society. No other markings in book. Very lightly read. Vol. 1-435pp.; Vol. 2-397pp.

One of the most sought-after of the late 19th century works on East African hunting and exploration. We have also had this in brown cloth.

Surface insect damage (silverfish) to spines, small chip to cloth surface (approx 8mm) above antelope on spine of Volume 1. The large folding maps have some linen reinforcing to verso near spine and along some folds but are complete and clean. Sporadic light to moderate foxing throughout but generally very clean tight copies with strong intact hinges. A complete two volume set, being the first UK Edition. Discovery of Lakes Rudolf and Stefanie is a narrative of Count Samuel Teleki's exploring and hunting expedition in Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1887 and 1888 written by his companion Lieut. Ludwig Von Hohnel. These works have been translated by Nancy Bell. Count Samuel Teleki was a Hungarian explorer who led the first expedition to Northern Kenya and the first European to see Lake Turkana. With in-text illustrations a folding map to the rear of volume one, missing the folding map to volume two. With a frontispiece to both volumes and twenty one full page plates to volume one and thirteen to volume two.Collated. Rebound with the original cloth boards restored. Tall 8vo, publisher's original pale blue cloth lettered in gilt and with gilt pictorial designs of African tribesmen and gazelles on top covers and spines, edges untrimmed. xx, 435; xii, 397 pp. A very handsome and pleasing set of this scarce first edition in the scarcest binding colour and with a few old and occasional but small and discreet library markings. The set was part of a reference library and not a lending library, thus remains in very pleasing, as fine condition. Shelf numbers in the lower quadrant of the spines sometime discreetly coloured over in pigment matching the binding colour, only light aging to the volumes. A very attractive pair.
