Wiggins (Trenton, New Jersey), 4 1/4 x 7 1/8 inches tall dark brown full leather bound (likely a modern rebind), gilt lettering and ruling to spine, 264 pp. Minor rubbing and edgewear to leather covers. Title page quite stained, torn and tattered, with a prior owner name lined out in black ink at the upper margin, lacking the upper and lower page tips and partly detached at the bottom of the page. Lower page tips clipped on the first dozen pages or so. Moderate foxing and staining throughout, with a moderate dampstain to the middle of the pages throughout the latter half of the book, especially pronounced in the past few pages of the volume. Despite all these faults, nevertheless a complete copy of this scarce edition which has a handsome shelf appearance. New-Bedford: Abraham Shearman, 1805. 16mo, pp. 256; a sheep binding under an applied over-binding of full sheep, red morocco label on original spine showing through a diecut window in the over-binding; sheep a bit rubbed, short tear on spine where label shows through; light foxing, ex-Hollis Social Library, with their bookplate and a very small rubberstamp on the title page. Payne was a publisher and associate of Samuel Johnson. His translation of A Kempis first appeared in 1785, and is printed here with his 38-page preface. American Imprints 8672.

Chipping to fore edge of front free-endpaper and bottom edge of title page. Light to moderate foxing throughout, typical for early nineteenth century imprints. Otherwise, apart from creasing to a handful of pages, a very good copy - clean and unmarked - in a handsome, solid period binding. Altogether a handsome example of an uncommon early American printing of this beloved devotional classic, intended for sale to a burgeoning Protestant and Quaker audience in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
