Ex-institutional copy with only an old handwritten call number label to spine, small label to front pastedown, and a small number in ink to title page. Full mottled dark brown leather with gilt-lettered red title label to spine. Heavy edgewear, rubbing, scratches, and cracking to leather (which will be treated with Talas leather dressing prior to shipment). Spine ends and corners bumped and chipped. Rear joint starting to split. Binding quite sound though ffep is loosely attached. Interior moderately toned and foxed. Text unmarked. Minor dampstaining along gutters of last several pages. Upper corners of first two blanks are clipped. Early prev owner name and note in pencil to front pastedown. Not illustrated. 744 pp.

Chapman, M.D., dated 14 Mar. 1864 on front blank preceding main title. Typical wear along deckled text block edges, first several leaves partially detached. viii,796 pp..

Thick octavo (21.5cm.); publisher's full calf, tan gilt spine label; 744pp. Slightly ex-Harvard Library with their small rubberstamp to title page verso, boards a bit scuffed and leather dried and starting to peel along extremities, glue residue to front pastedown from previously removed ex libris, else Very Good, internally sound. This state issued without preliminary materials as seen in other copies (no priority). Sturdy copy of one of the earliest American medical textbooks, the author arguing that "the diseases particular to a country, are most judiciously treated by native physicians, who are particularly conversant with their true characteristics" (p. [i]). See ATWATER 3460.1, AUSTIN 1876, and SHAW & SHOEMAKER 42260 for the above-mentioned variant of this edition.
