Title page and last page (printer's crest) are slightly foxed. ; Approx. 8 1/2" wide by 12 1/2". One page of text followed by folded page with plate and second page of text. When fold is open, entire contents are displayed. Four stanza poem is in facsimile Kipling handwriting. Plate is "A gentleman in kharki" by R. Caton Woodville. ; 3 pages .

Kipling's poem The Absent-Minded Beggar was published in the (London) Daily Mail on October 31, 1899, as part of an appeals for funds for the families of British servicemen serving in the Boer War. The Brentano's edition is the probable first American edition (Stewart & Yeats cite an undated New Bedford, Mass., edition as another possible contender). The poem was not published collected form until 1914, when it appeared in vol. XXII of the Bombay Edition. Sir Arthur Sullivan set it to music. Livingston 224; Stewart & Yeats 214

Notched along the spine with the pages numbered in ink by hand from once being bound within an album, music shop stamp on the front wrapper, rubbing to the exterior, still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint, "E & S 2703." "For every copy sold of this song, one shilling goes to *The Daily Mail* fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war" (from the front cover). This charitable effort by *The Daily Mail* to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War was reportedly the first of its kind. Kipling wrote the lyrics specifically to be used in this fashion, and is quoted as saying, "It's catchpenny verse and I want it to catch just as many pennies as it can," going on to remark that it is not something he would ever care to reprint, "so there is no need of copyrighting it in America. The Daily Mail Ca. 1899. Held in gilded wooded frame behind glass Framed size 47cm x 59cm. Embroidered Surface approx 47cm x 47cm. In good condition. Some foxing & a few small marks. Portraits of Lord Roberts (commander of the British troops) and Queen Victoria frame the text and a detailed map of the region being fought over: Natal, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South African Republic. Authentic Boer War item. Part of an appeal by The Daily Mail, this item was one of a large quantity of merchandise sold to raise money for soldiers fighting in the South African War and their families. The fund was the first charitable effort in Britain for a war.

[London?], c. 1900. Second Anglo-Boer War souvenir handkerchief, 45 x 45 cm, printed in blue ink on fine linen, a couple of trivial spots, blank verso. Set in the borders of a map showing the contested regions of South Africa (chiefly Orange Free State and Transvaal) is the text of Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The Absent-Minded Beggar', with the music of Arthur Sullivan. The map is further adorned with portraits of Queen Victoria and Field Marshal Lord Roberts, who was commander of British forces in the field between December 1899 and December 1900. It was published by the Daily Mail, then a relatively new but highly successful British newspaper: established in 1896, its circulation had soared to over a million - the largest in the world - by the war's end in 1902. Kipling presented his poem to the Mail, which established a charitable fund (soon known as the Absent Minded Beggar Fund) to provide comforts for British troops on campaign and support for their families at home.… Ler mais
