The beautifully engraved title page is mounted on old paper, old bookplate and old name and date 1854 on front endpaper. Leather on the spine is split a few cm at top and bottom, binding is firm, loss of bottom corner of pages 509-512, misprinting at the top of p. 608. John Weever (1576-1632) was an English antiquary and poet. His Ancient Funerall Monuments, the first full-length book to be dedicated to the topic of English church monuments and epitaphs was published in 1631. The work included a lengthy introductory global overview of his subject, the "Discourse of Funerall Monuments"; and this was followed by a survey of over a thousand inscriptions in the four south-eastern dioceses of England: Canterbury, Rochester, London and Norwich. Portrait frontis and decorated title page with 5 additional full page woodcuts and 15 in text. 19th century polished calf with gilt rules and corner emblems, gilt dentelles, and marbled endpapers. Ink name at top of title page, light rubbing to the edges, joints a bit cracked at the top, else a much nicer example than usually turns up.
