A single tiny blemish to the fore edge of the front free endpaper, and a St. Lucia bookshop inkstamp to the base of the front pastedown. A virtually fine copy in Germano Facetti-designed dust wrapper, lightly chafed at the natural folds and with several miniscule fractions of loss to the corner tips. The future Nobel Laureate's first book to be published in the UK, comprising 42 poems most of which had previously appeared in various of the author's rare Trinidad-issued pamphlets..

Price-clipped dust wrapper over paper boards, the wrapper has been damped and the green colouring has faintly bled onto the boards beneath, this has also affected the fore-edge of the rear free end-paper and the lower corner margins of the last half-dozen leaves, the wrapper is slightly worn at spine ends and corners, else text clean, with the signature of M. A. L. HENDRIKS, Jamaican poet [1922-1992]. *This collection was the first of Walcott's poems to be issued in England. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992.

A beautiful copy, fine in a fine jacket with a couple of minor age spots on the endpapers, this copy also has the extremely rare dark green wraparound band with the Robert Graves quote ("Derek Walcott handles English with a closer understanding of its inner magic than most (if not any) of his English-born contemporaries."). This copy is signed on the front free endpaper by Walcott and dated April 99.

In A Green Night was the author's first collection of poems to be published outside of the Caribbean. Walcott went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992 and is best known for his Omeros (1990), an epic poem retelling the Homeric legends in a modern Caribbean setting. This poetry collection was his first major and international success. Dedicated to his mother, Alix Walcott, the book "brought together what he considered to be the best of his verse to date... [it] represents a coming of age for Walcott, the first clear step on his Odyssean journey towards becoming a Caribbean Homer" (Thieme, pp. 14 and 38). Octavo.
