He was appointed the first Chief Medical Officer in 1855 for Her Majesty's Government. This in depth history begins with Roman institutions and medieval philanthropy and quickly moves through post-medieval England. The majority of the book focuses on the "modern Victorian period" with chapters on preventative medicine, the growth of humanity in English politics, the first cholera epidemic in Europe, the Public Health Legislation of 1848, politics of poverty, and state medicine since 1871. Very good in maroon cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Minor wear to edges of boards and fraying to head of spine. Repair to top of front hinge.
