Richards. Shops include the family butcher, the coach builder, the cheesemonger, the knife grinder and the oyster bar. Only 2000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. As a result, it has become one of the most collectable of all artist's books from this period. This beautiful facsimile edition features Ravilious's illustrations in exquisite colour and includes an essay by V&A curator Gill Saunders placing the book and its history into context. Condition: The book is in excellent condition. The dustwrapper has a little edgewear but is now within a protective sleeve.

Limited edition of 750 copies, a handsome production to mark the 70th anniversary of the original edition of High Street, first published in 1938 by Country Life Books. Conceived as a children's book of shops, it features 24 lithographs by Eric Ravilious depicting a variety of wonderful local shops of the pre-war era - cheesemongers, oyster bars, wedding cakes, letter makers, theatrical properties, model ships and railways, submarine engineers, fireworks, amusement arcades, and more. High Street is one of the most famous and beloved English illustrated books of the twentieth century.
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) was a painter, illustrator, lithographer, wood-engraver, and designer, who is now regarded as one of the finest English artists of the twentieth-century. Ravilious served as a war artist and was killed on a search and rescue flight from Iceland in September 1942.

First edition, sole impression; 8vo; 24 colour lithograph plates and plain wood-engraved title vignette by Eric Ravilious; publisher's pictorial boards, with the 'transmatic' dust jacket and printed card flaps, a superb copy in the rare cellophane dust-jacket with printed paper flaps, cellophane shrunk as usual with front flap separated, nevertheless a stunning copy of a vulnerable book. Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), artist, designer and wood-engraver, produced his first lithograph in 1936 entitled 'Newhaven Harbour', which was printed by the Curwen Press. The 'High Street' series of lithographs was created between 1936 and 1937 based on an idea of an 'alphabet of shops' given to him by his partner, Helen Binyon. Ravilious had initially proposed it to the Golden Cockerel Press, with whom he had previously worked, but they were unable to undertake such an ambitious project whereas Curwen's great interest in the area of lithography saw them subsidise… Ler mais
