(Philadelphia): (Hickman & Hazzard), 1821. Irish barrister Charles Phillips (1787-1859) was a noted, although perhaps florid, orator of his day. Although he was a Protestant, he favored Catholic Emancipation. Starting in 1820, several collections of his speeches were published. While this copy has no Title Page (there is no sign that it was ever there, so this is probably a printer's defect), the collation seems to match the First American Edition from Hickman and Hazzard (Philadelphia, 1821). Uncommon to rare in any edition. Full leather binding, smooth calf, with ruling and a red label on the spine. Clean text; xviii, 249 pages; frontis portrait of Phillips. Preface by John Finlay. While there is spotting/tanning throughout, the paper reamains supple and is easily readable today. A sound little copy, despite its mysterious origin.. Later Printing. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

This is a Very Good copy of the Sixth American Edition (stated). Uncommon to rare in any edition. Full leather binding, ruled in gilt on the covers. Spine is titled and decorated in gilt. Clean text; xviii, 249 pages; frontis portrait of Phillips. There is an ink signature (contemporary) on the Title Page; penciled notes and a faint signature on the FFEP. There is another signature (1863) on the FPD, along with a small (contemporary) label. The pages are tanned but remain supple and quite readable. Bumped, and the covers are rubbed but not dried out. . Sixth American Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/Near Fine. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.

Contemporary engraved lending library bookplate on front pastedown (no other library markings). Owner's contemporary 14-line ink inscription on rear flyleaf (in brown ink). Spine and extremities of the binding are moderately rubbed, narrow chip on spine label, thin surface chip on front cover, few pages of text are moderately foxed, lower corner margin of one page of text is chipped (circa one inch by two inches, with no loss of text), else a very good copy.
